BREAKING NEWS - NYC: THE STEVE ROSS ORCHESTRA - "RHYTHM AND ROMANCE" AT BIRDLAND SUNDAY, MAY 1st

BREAKING NEWS - NYC: THE STEVE ROSS ORCHESTRA - "RHYTHM AND ROMANCE" AT BIRDLAND SUNDAY, MAY 1st

The Steve Ross Orchestra with The Yale Concert Band presents "Rhythm and Romance" at  BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sunday, May 1st at 6:00 pm as part of the Broadway at Birdland concert series. Singer/ pianist Steve Ross, and members of the Yale Concert Band, under the direction of Tom Duffy, will perform the sweet and saucy songs of Steve's favorite composer, Cole Porter, iconic songs by Irving Berlin, and the bright and rhythmic numbers associated with the inimitable Fred Astaire. Steve Ross was raised in Washington, DC, and heard a lot of music at home, some from his mother who played piano. In due course, he studied piano himself and by the time he had attended Georgetown University, spent a little time in a seminary, and served in the US Army, he had become an accomplished pianist, drawing his repertoire, not from contemporary pop, but from the Great American Songbook. In the early 70s he settled in New York City where he soon became well known on the city's cabaret scene. At first a background pianist, he was urged by club owners to sing and gradually began to do this, eventually training as a singer. As his personal style developed, so his reputation spread. Ted Hook, owner of Backstage, a piano bar in the midtown theatre district, hired him. The association was hugely successful and in 1979 Hook opened a new club, Onstage, especially to showcase Ross' talents. In 1981, Ross was booked into the Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel where he played a considerable part in establishing the room as a perennial favorite of artists and customers. At some venues he would find himself accompanying leading entertainers who happened to be in the audience, among them Liza Minnelli and Ginger Rogers. Ross toured Australia in1986, one of his shows there being recorded at Don Burrows' Supper Club, and he returned to that country in the late 90s. He has played many festivals, including Perth in Australia, Spoleto in Italy, and Hong Kong. Other international venues include seasons at London's Ritz Hotel and Pizza On ThePark. In 1989, he hosted a live cabaret series for BBC Television, and back inAmerica was host of New York Cabaret Nights, a series for National PublicRadio. Ross maintained his popularity and high standards through the 90s and into the early 00s. In the winter of 1996/7, he appeared in a revival of Noel Coward's Present Laughter at the Walter Kerr Theatre; the show, which starred Frank Langella, ran for 175performances. At New York's Stanhope Park Hyatt Hotel in the winter of 2003/4 he presented a new cabaret show, My Manhattan, an elegant portrait of a hundred years of the city's life seen through song. Ross' repertoire draws from the work of songwriters past and present, such as George Gershwin, Cole Porter, with whose work he has a special affinity, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, and Stephen Sondheim. He has appeared with stride pianist Judy Carmichael, performing a show entitled Style Meets Stride that featured the music of Porter and Fats Waller. Ross sings in a light baritone voice, playing the piano with verve. For several years, he has been referred to as 'the Crown Prince of New York Cabaret," an unofficial but merited title. There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

HOTLINE MEMBER CABARET EVENT TONIGHT IN DUNELLEN, NJ: PEACHES AND CRIME BRING THEATRE AND MUSIC BACK TO RADIO THEATER - April 23rd

HOTLINE MEMBER CABARET EVENT TONIGHT IN
DUNELLEN, NJ:
PEACHES AND CRIME BRING THEATRE AND MUSIC BACK TO RADIO THEATER - April 23rd
You Choose The Action Murder Mystery Before Live Audience

For years, the all-original Vaudeville variety musical act Peaches and Crime has been bringing a revival of a vibrant, varied, and unpredictable stage art for to stages across New York and beyond. But on Saturday, April 23rd at 9:00 pm, Peaches and Crime will bring their special brand of macabre music and wit to ROXY & DUKEIS ROADHOUSE (745 Bound Brook Road, Dunellen, NJ - 732-529-4464) reviving yet another neglected American art form - a live radio play, fresh from its premier at Manhattan's exclusive FEINSTEINS/54 BELOW cabaret. For decades, live radio drama and comedy broadcasts were the American public's principle and most easily-available form of home entertainment. Before television became practical but after the movies drove many Vaudevillians away from successful touring stage careers, radio brought the country's greatest performers into the homes of the public while leaving space for the listener's visual imagination to work. The comedies were invariably performed before a live audience, with the actors holding scripts and wearing street clothes, but nonetheless bringing their characters to life with the energy of live theatre. Aware that in Dunellen their primary listenership will be sitting in front of them rather than listening at home, Peaches and Crime have added an audience participation element to the proceedings, pausing the play at several key points to allow the audience to decide which choices characters will make and what course the action will take. There is a $12 cover in advance ($20 cash cover at door) - available at https://www.showclix.com/event/peaches-and-crime

Barbara And Austin have known one another in many roles through several decades, and have shared much of their past and current lives with one another, usually over drinks at a bar. He curently also teaches acting in New York at HB Studio, where he studied with Uta Hagen and Herbert Berghof. He also studied acting with Robert Lewis. The mother of a psychopathic killer in the cult classic, SWOON, she appeared most recently in THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU, with Jane Fonda and Tina Fey, and in THEY CAME TOGETHER, with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler. She just completed a cabaret engagement in Los Angeles, at the Gardenia. Her solo show, WHO'S YOUR MAMA? was selected for production in the NYC Women at Work Festival, and her two-person revue with Austin Pendleton received critical praise in New York and Chicago. SWEET LIFE - A NEW CD BY JIM SPEAKE

This recording had a long gestation, starting when Jim was born in Florence Alabama in1945. This was very close to the place where musical magic was to be made, the famous recording studios in Muscle Shoals. By coincidence, Percy Sledge was born in the same little town where his family and Jim lived, Leighton, Alabama. He had a major hit with his first recording in 1966, and the "Muscle Shoals Sound" was firmly established. Jim Speake had music in his life from an early age, because he sang along with his mother when she played the piano and sang. A track of his first recording session at four, can be found on Jim's first CD, "Jim Speake Sings My Generation." It was expected that he would go into the family business of farming. Instead, when Speake went to college, he earned degrees in Business Administration, University of Alabama and ultimately Landscape Architecture, University of Georgia. If he had followed my heart, he would have studied music. That was a road Jim did not take seriously until he moved to New York City in 2000. There, while studying acting and voice, Jim was lucky enough to meet some key people who have been vital to his development as a singer. At H.B. Studio, he met KT Sullivan. KT introduced Jim to Eric Michael Gillett. Eric Michael introduced him to Patrick DeGennaro. Patrick introduced him to Lennie Watts and Steven Ray Watkins. 2015 marked the tenth anniversary of his collaboration with these two talented men. Most of the arrangements on this recording were developed working with this same team. It is not a stretch to say thatSpeake would not have made this recording had he not met Lennie and Steven. He especially appreciates Lennie's support through this journey and also introducing him to Paul Rolnick.

DUNELLEN, NJ: PEACHES AND CRIME BRING THEATRE AND MUSIC BACK TO RADIO THEATER - April 23rd

LONDON: ROBIN PHILLIPS RETURNS TO THE CRAZY COQS

Singer / pianist Robin Phillips returns to THE CRAZY COQS AT BRASSERIE ZEDEL (20 Sherwood St, Piccadilly, London W1F 7ED - 020 7734 4888) on Saturday, April 23rd at 10:30 pm as part of the club's Late Night Jazz Series. Phillips was an exciting introduction to the Crazy Coqs line-up in 2015 and is now a regular performer at their late night jazz nights. Emerging as one of the UK's leading jazz singer pianists, Robin Phillips' passionate performances are as informative as they are engaging and entertaining. With Jay Darwish on upright bass and Alex Best on drums, this young and energetic trio definitely hark back to a golden age of jazz, but their arrangements have a distinctly modern edge. Inspired by singer / instrumentalists such as Harry Connick Jr and Chet Baker, but also jazz vocalists such as Mark Murphy, Mel Torme and Jon Hendricks, Robin's current passion is unearthing the lost introductions ('verses') to many of the classic jazz standards. At Crazy Coqs, the trio will be performing a collection of classic and not-so-well-known jazz standards, many re-arranged with a modern feel, including material from Robin's two previous albums and his upcoming recording project.' Call for reservations and cover/minimum information.
